Overview

The prevalence of data in our society alongside calls for increasing access and use pose challenges to efforts that also pledge confidentiality and protection of sensitive information. Yet recognizing and realizing the value of this information means ongoing attention is needed to the practices, protocols, and protections for guarding confidential and sensitive data about individuals and businesses.

As the federal government advances the Federal Data Strategy, it must address the need to address emerging risks of re-identification, develop, and promote new strategies for maintaining confidentiality and data privacy, all while also providing appropriate access to federal data assets.  What guidance do agencies need as they evaluate the sensitivity of their data assets? How should agencies conduct risk assessments for de-identified data? What are appropriate data protection programs, and how should agencies simultaneously promote openness and privacy?

The discussion was lead by leading experts who are developing emerging standards to help ensure our public data is protected.
