Press Releases and Statements |
WASHINGTON, D.C., April 2, 2025 – In February 2025, Rep. Randy Feenstra (R-IA), along with co-sponsor Rep. Brad Schneider (D-IL), introduced the Internal Revenue Service Math and Taxpayer Help Act (H.R. 998), requiring the IRS to clearly communicate mathematical adjustments made to taxpayers' returns. The House passed the legislation on March 31, 2025. On behalf of the Data Foundation, President and CEO Nick Hart issued the following statement:
"The Data Foundation and our Data Coalition initiative strongly support H.R. 998, the IRS Math and Taxpayer Help Act, which passed the House yesterday. While the IRS has made notable progress in modernizing systems and improving interoperability, Americans deserve clearer communication about adjustments to their tax submissions using the data already collected by the IRS.
"This bipartisan legislation enhances transparency by requiring the IRS to provide specific explanations when changes are made to taxpayers' returns, strengthening the relationship between citizens and government through better data communication practices. We commend the House for advancing this important taxpayer service improvement and look forward to seeing the legislation advance in the Senate."
