The year 2024 marked a pivotal moment for the Data Foundation and the broader federal data community. As the nation commemorated the fifth anniversary of the Foundations for Evidence-Based Policymaking Act of 2018 (Evidence Act), the landscape of government data use had fundamentally transformed. Chief Data Officers (CDOs) were now established across federal agencies. Evaluation offices were producing rigorous assessments of program effectiveness. Open data initiatives were enabling innovation across sectors.
At the Data Foundation, we responded to this evolution by formalizing and expanding our organizational structure. We launched two new centers—the Center for Data Policy and the Center for Evidence Capacity—creating dedicated expertise to advance our mission. We established the Climate Data Collaborative to address one of the most pressing challenges of our time. And we continued our role as convener, advocate, and thought leader across the data community.
This report reflects on a year of strategic growth and sustained impact. It documents our work at a moment when the foundation we helped build—through years of advocacy, partnership, and pragmatic problem-solving—was being tested and strengthened. The achievements captured here represent not just organizational milestones, but contributions to the broader ecosystem of evidence-informed decision-making that serves the American people.
As we publish this retrospective, we do so with clear-eyed recognition that the work of building and maintaining democratic data infrastructure requires constant vigilance, adaptation, and commitment to core principles. The accomplishments of 2024 positioned us to meet future challenges and opportunities.
