Data Foundation Announces Partnership with White House on Year of Evidence for Action

WASHINGTON, D.C., April 7, 2022– The Data Foundation is pleased to announce a partnership with the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) to support the Year of Evidence for Action in 2022. The Year of Evidence for Action announced by the White House in April 2022 is intended to lift up efforts across the federal government to generate and use evidence to advance better, more equitable outcomes for the American public. As part of the partnership, the Data Foundation is committed to host a convening on NextGen Evidence: Exploring Approaches for Applying Evidence in Active, Real-Time Decision-Making Environments.

“Effective evidence-informed policymaking in the United States today requires engagement, collaboration, and active participation across the public and private sectors,” said Nick Hart, President of the Data Foundation. “In 2022, we look forward to advancing the theory and practice for the current generation of evidence – and the next generation – by bringing together diverse communities to better understand and apply emerging models for using information in complex, dynamic, real-time decision-making environments. In other words, we know the real world is messy, policymaking is difficult, and real decision-making requires the use of evidence in the face of uncertainty. Using the best data and applying evidence in practice doesn’t happen in a laboratory, which means we need better approaches that help users understand how to use evidence to inform decisions in real life, in real-time, and in real settings. The Data Foundation will support efforts to develop and promote NextGen Evidence as part of the Year of Evidence for Action.”

As implementation of data and evidence initiatives across the public sector are underway, and the evidence-informed policy and practice becomes more institutionalized in all levels of government, further consideration is needed about how to effectively ensure knowledge and evidence are rapidly translated and “brokered” for decision-making uses in context. That is, how will the generated evidence most effectively be translated into practice and policy, and used. The Data Foundation is committed to ensuring data and evidence are used to benefit society, which is why supporting the Year of Evidence for  Action clearly aligns with the Data Foundation’s mission.
