WASHINGTON, D.C., December 6, 2024 – The Data Foundation welcomes important evidence and data provisions in the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) Reauthorization Act (H.R. 9598) passed by the House of Representatives on December 5. On behalf of the Data Foundation, President and CEO Nick Hart issued the following statement:
"The Data Foundation commends Congress for strengthening requirements for evidence-informed decision-making in drug control policy through the ONDCP reauthorization. The legislation's formal recognition of evidence in ONDCP operations and alignment with the Evidence Act's definition of evidence marks meaningful progress for ensuring policies and programs are designed using valid, reliable information.
"We are particularly encouraged by the enhanced coordination with the Chief Data Officers Council and requirements for standardized data collection procedures. The legislation reinforces the vital role CDOs play in developing government-wide data standards and sharing frameworks, priorities the Data Foundation has long championed.
"The Data Foundation looks forward to working with ONDCP and partner agencies to implement these improvements to drug control policy data infrastructure. We stand ready to support implementation of the strengthened evidence and evaluation requirements to better understand what works in addressing substance use challenges facing our communities."
